This coming new year we should try different ways to get more customers in our business. When starting a new business venture, the first step should be to get customers into your business and the second step should be to get (if you can) as many samples as you can.
One thing I know for sure is not to focus on making samples yourself. I have discovered that although it is a fun way to make samples, it is a waste of time especially if you can use that time to find customers for your business.
It is important to build a strong business even if you have been in business for a long time. Striving to get your 100 customers list may sound like a HUGE thing to do, but if you break it down into small attainable steps, it can be done. This new year the goals should be to get customers out of your social media platforms and go out there where there are people that need to know you’re open for business.
So here are two ideas I have tried over the years that can not only bring fun into your life, but prospects into your business. These two ideas are a great way to meet people and can bring children to you who are a great source for attracting their moms into your business. Before I share these ideas, you will need to be prepared with these items on hand.
Note: You don’t have to have everything I used, but you can tailor it to your needs.
- Sample Packs (see my blog post on this topic)
- Pack of bottled water (summer activity)
- Chips and Candy (summer activity)
- Homemade coffee (winter activity)
- Hot water (winter activity)
- Tea bags and hot cocoa packets (winter activity)
- Hot beverage cups, sugar, creamer packets and stirrers
Let’s talk about the winter activities first since that’s where we’re at now. Black Friday already happened but we’re going to focus on all those people waiting outside in the cold weather waiting for the doors to be opened to go shopping and grab some deals. You may not be one of these people (like me 😁), but here’s the point I’m going to make.
These people are already prepared to wait in line the day before Black Friday. Tailgating has its benefits for your business. Advice: Never go alone to these types of activities. Make sure a friend or family member goes with you. Those sample packs should have a sticky note outside of them because you’re not just giving out these bags, you are collecting their information to follow up with them to find out how they liked your samples.
In order to do this, your partner (whomever is keeping you company that day) will be offering and serving their hot beverage to those waiting to go shopping. You will introduce yourself as their Consultant while serving them their hot beverage. Make sure you have a set amount of sample packs you want to give out that day. Do this each year at a different location so that you spread your wings throughout the community.
In the summertime, find out where the baseball games are taking place. I’m not referring to big name baseball games, but the community baseball games that take place in a school’s playground. They are free and you can set up there and don’t have to pay a penny. At these games, bring the following (again, tailor it to your own needs):
- Folding table
- Chips and Candy
- Pack of bottled water
- Sample packs
- Drawing slips
- One inexpensive gift basket with your products in it
Children will be attracted to the candy you will have at your table. They are the best prospects you can ever meet because they will encourage their parents to visit your table. At these summer events, I do sell water, soda, chips, and candy. The money you make out of these items can help you purchase additional samples to prepare more samples packages for the next event. You do not need a permit to sell at these free games. However, make sure you find out about what it’s required in your state. This idea of setting up a table at the summer games was given and encouraged by my neighbor who attends these events every Saturday during the summer. I set up my table from 10am-2pm and not only did I enjoy a good game, but I met so many people who were interested in what I had to offer. This is how I build my customer base during the slow summer months.

Let the new year be a year of no more excuses and more action. There are ways to do this. You can do this!
